Tsunami warning system to be installed on Koh Samui

A tsunami warning system will be installed on Samui Island, Thailand's famous resort island in this southern Surat Thani Province.

Surat Thani Governor Thawatchai Therdphaothati said on Sunday the tsunami warning system would be located on Koh Samui's Chaweng Beach, representing the country's sole disaster warning system in the Gulf of Thailand so far.

"The installation of the tsunami warning system on Chaweng Beach is expected to be complete next month," he told journalists.

"The newly-installed early warning system will be directly linked with the National Disaster Warning Centre in Bangkok's suburban Nonthaburi Province," he added.

Rehearsal plans on evacuation of local residents and tourists in case of a tsunami will be set after the installation of the new disaster warning system on the island, according to the provincial governor
